Disk Drive Test (HDD, SSD, NVME)

WinStress TestTest DescriptionsUpdated 8/22/2024

This function performs a series of tests on selected drives.

Select the drive(s) you want to test from the Hard Drive Menu. Depending on the test size specified, the Seek and Read tests take some time to execute.

No data on the hard disk is altered or destroyed while running tests.

Any test that fails, may indicate physical flaws; and/or logical (read/write) errors on the media, and/or mechanical or electrical problems with the hard drive sub-system.

SMART Tests

Execute Immediate

Test time: ~ 2 - 240 minutes.

Description: This command causes the device to immediately initiate the optional set of activities that collect SMART data in an off-line mode and then save this data to the device's non-volatile memory, or execute a self-diagnostic test routine in either a captive or off-line mode.

Short Self-Test

Test time: ~ 1-4 minutes.

Description:

Performs a collection of test routines on a small sample of the drive’s surface, checking sectors from the Pending-list (such sectors may have read errors). This test recommended for quick health status of the drive.

Extended Self-Test

Test time: ~ 30 - 240 minutes.

Description: Performs a collection of test routines on the complete disk surface. This test recommended if no test session time restrictions.

Conveyance Self-Test

Test time: ~ 30 - 240 minutes.

Description: Identifies any damage incurred during the transporting or storing of the drive.

Check attributes and Check Error Log

Test time: ~ 5 seconds.

Description: Performs a check to identify if any SMART attributes are exceeding thresholds determined by the drive manufacturer.

SSD

Intel, Samsung, Sandforce, IndiLinx, Micron, Satron, SMT, STEC, Kingston, SilMotion, Apple SSD Health Check

Test time: ~ 3-5 seconds.

Description: Performs a quick check to identify SSD specific SMART attributes are exceeding thresholds determined by the drive manufacturer. Ideal for check wear-leveling status or life expectancy warnings.

NVMe Tests

Test time: ~ 10 - 30 seconds.

Description: Performs a check to identify if any NVMe attributes are exceeding thresholds determined by the drive manufacturer.

Disk Bandwidth Test

Test time: ~ 30 - 60 seconds.

Description: Performs a read and write test to check for performance bandwidth. Minimal Read and Write thresholds may be configured / adjusted to accommodate the type of disk being tested (HDD, SSD, NVMe).
